Purpose

A significant and major problem that currently resonates within UC Irvine is the issue of incoming freshmen and transfer students of being unable to identify and distinguish between majors in the school of ICS and Engineering, most prominently Computer Science, Informatics, Software Engineering, Computer Game Science, Computer Science and Engineering, and Computer Engineering. Often times, students are not knowledgeable and aware of the distinct differences between these majors and the various prospective outcomes that can be achieved by studying them, and follow the social norm of devoting to concentrating and majoring in a popular and common major, such as Computer Science, since it is the most widely available major in all colleges and universities in the country, and people believing that the other less known majors are essentially the same, but with a different names.

This website's purpose is to focus primarily on resolving this issue that clearly illustrates, describes, and explains the differences between these majors to better educate people in them, and help them appropriately choose which of the offered majors in the school of ICS and Informatics is right for them. By providing, presenting, and making accessible relevant information on a central public website, students are able to be more aware of the differences and individual benefits of each major. We strive to increase the enrollment number of students that pursue in the less popular and well-known majors, and to create more diversity and balance among students in the ICS, Informatics, and Engineering environment.

As an independent school focused solely on the computer and information sciences, the Bren School has a unique perspective on the information technology disciplines that allows us a broad foundation from which to build educational programs and research initiatives that explore the many applications of the computing discipline — from circuits and systems to software engineering and human aspects of computing.
